The Comic Book Yard Sales are an important component of ComicWise’s attempt to build a local clientele. This last weekend, ComicWise held its most recent Comic Book Yard Sale, which is not really a yard sale, since I have the sale in the garage… but I do like the name! Had lots of regulars come through all weekend, which is pleasant, I also get time to talk to friends and acquaintances. ComicWise’s Comic Book Yard Sale is a monthly affair, depending on my convention schedule. Next month for the Christmas season, ComicWise will hold the Comic Book Yard Sale, December 8 and 9, 2012! Remember, everything is 25% off on Yard Sale weekends, hopefully, you can come and try Bakersfield’s biggest comic store in a garage.

Long Beach Comic Con

Long Beach Comic Con was again a pleasant weekend. The Convention Center is right on the harbor, so the weather is always pleasant, which is a big attraction! We have good access to downtown Long Beach, dinner is walking distance, which makes for the beginning of a pleasant evening after working all day! My booth was across from Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, so I got to talk to them a little and got to watch Amanda sketch. They graciously signed a comic for a customer here in Bakersfield, so that alone made it a nice weekend. Took a few pictures, which can be viewed on facebook. Had lots of good help to make it an easier weekend, but I do think I need a new fuel filter for my truck…

Bakersfield Comic Con

Bakersfield Comic Con was, again, a fun Sunday! Got to see lots of friends and customers; it’s always pleasing to serve the local Bakersfield area! Had lots of help throughout the day, which always makes it easier to try to assist people, looking for books. Handed out lots of flyers for the next Comic Book Yard Sale, November 11 and 12, 2012 and handed out lots of business cards for new customers, who now know there is a new comic alternative on the west side of Bakersfield! Hope you enjoyed Bakersfield Comic Con as much as I did, hope to see you there next year!

Bakersfield Comic Con is probably my favorite comic show of the year! Not because it’s the biggest show, or because we earn the most income, but instead, it’s filled with friends and people from Bakersfield and Kern County! I like it best, because we’re at home! Bakersfield Comic Con is a nice opportunity to talk to people from the surrounding areas, that don’t know what ComicWise does and how a home-based comic outlet works! Many people are surprised to find that we don’t have a storefront, so instead we get to demonstrate that we have lots of comics and lots of expertise that we are willing to share!

This year, ComicWise will be selling everything, I mean everything for 25% off at Bakersfield Comic Con! No exceptions! ComicWise will bring about one hundred boxes of comics and two racks full of paperbacks and hardcovers for Kern County to peruse! ComicWise will be looking forward to seeing you at the show, look for our signs! Come by and say hi!

APE (Alternative Press Expo) I worked my first APE this last weekend in San Francisco! It is an extremely different type of comic show. This is a small press show, dominated by artists, selling their comics and prints directly to fans! Most of these books can only be purchased directly from the artists, as most of these artists do not have distribution beyond their tables at a show. In addition to individual artists, small independent publishers, such as a personal favorite Top Shelf, also have a presence at APE. As such, having a comic book dealer, like me and having ComicWise as a business at APE is slightly odd. The spirit and frankly rules of the show ask that the few vendors, bring independent comics and paperbacks. I worked hard last week to pull out all the Marvel and DC paperbacks and hardcovers from ComicWise’s stock and I only brought a few independent comics! Not only does the show have a different vibe, it is a relaxed vibe. Many people were exploring, since APE brought in many people unsure of what to expect! I saw a few regular faces, but many people were new and not familiar with the comic world. ComicWise had the opportunity to talk to many of these people and put cool independent and alternative comics in their hands. Personally, I got to talk extensively to Steve Leialoha, who inks Fables, a personal favorite and got to meet and talk to Gilbert Hernandez, who with his brothers produced Love and Rockets and many other weird, wonderful comics!
