APE (Alternative Press Expo) I worked my first APE this last weekend in San Francisco! It is an extremely different type of comic show. This is a small press show, dominated by artists, selling their comics and prints directly to fans! Most of these books can only be purchased directly from the artists, as most of these artists do not have distribution beyond their tables at a show. In addition to individual artists, small independent publishers, such as a personal favorite Top Shelf, also have a presence at APE. As such, having a comic book dealer, like me and having ComicWise as a business at APE is slightly odd. The spirit and frankly rules of the show ask that the few vendors, bring independent comics and paperbacks. I worked hard last week to pull out all the Marvel and DC paperbacks and hardcovers from ComicWise’s stock and I only brought a few independent comics! Not only does the show have a different vibe, it is a relaxed vibe. Many people were exploring, since APE brought in many people unsure of what to expect! I saw a few regular faces, but many people were new and not familiar with the comic world. ComicWise had the opportunity to talk to many of these people and put cool independent and alternative comics in their hands. Personally, I got to talk extensively to Steve Leialoha, who inks Fables, a personal favorite and got to meet and talk to Gilbert Hernandez, who with his brothers produced Love and Rockets and many other weird, wonderful comics!

LAS VEGAS COMIC EXPO
The inaugural Las Vegas Comic Expo was the first major Las Vegas comic show in nine years! The show moved at the last minute to the Riviera, due to flash flooding, which damaged the Alexis Park Hotel, which was the original venue. Las Vegas Comic Expo moving to the Riviera was not without its hitches, but we got unloaded easily, and moved into the hotel, where we stayed. We shared the Riviera convention center with a darts tournament! ComicWise had dinner at the Rio and I was shown how to play craps, not that I gambled a penny. My gambling is limited to taking a chance on a new show! The show started slowly as people filtered in and took a look around. Many people noted that they had never been to a comic show! ComicWise had a brush with greatness, when I sold comics to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s son! Yes, that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Saturday night, someone in the ComicWise crew commemorated the show by getting a Green Lantern (John Stewart) tattoo! Overall, a good show; had to be back in Bakersfield on Monday morning! Next up, ComicWise’s own Comic Book Yard Sale!

ComicWise went to a small mall show in suburban San Francisco last weekend. These small shows are the backbone of convention business. Small one-day shows and mall shows keep comics moving. You get to talk to lots of different types of customers, which improves communication, and sell comics you might sell other places, since your customers are extremely diverse. These are long days, since you keep mall hours, which is into the evening. I read and people-watch at these shows to keep busy. Serramonte Center was a typical mall show with a diverse dealer population selling sports cards, toys, comics, movie memorabilia, DVDs, and lots of other pop culture items. I was paired with two sports card dealers, one selling vintage material and one selling photos and new cards. Serramonte Center had a lot of people walking through with a lot of questions, which is always a good sign that you can make a good’s day sales.

All comic shows come with their dramas, some are manufactured and some demonstrate problems. Comikaze was no different. We unloaded on Friday in the boiling heat, rarely do the dealers get the air conditioning turned on while we are unloading, and went to work building the booth. Boxes have to be sorted to get into the right places and boxes have to be unloaded to display books! Racks have to be erected, signs have to be placed, and the booth has to be cleaned and organized before you can leave for the day. I got out around 9:00 PM, waiting for friends, hoping to get dinner company. They worked even later, I did find a nice Chinese buffet in Burbank. We stayed in the valley at a friend’s and fellow dealer’s apartment, sleeping on the couch and floor. One bedroom apartment! On Saturday morning, my help arrived, Erwin Ledford and Stephinie Touch, making the show manageable and frankly a lot more fun! We went to work, helping customers to find comic books, watching the people in costume and generally enjoying the chaos unfold around us! Saturday afternoon was tough as it became apparent that attendees were having a hard time getting in the door. Lines stretched around the Los Angeles Convention Center! We did not get to see the lines, but we heard about them! Inside, people were running the zombie survival course, checking out the artists, and buying lots of comics! Sunday was largely a repeat of Saturday, smaller audience, but again, lots of costumes and lots of people walking around, having fun and buying comics!
